Plankton Tour

The Bioluminescent Plankton tour is a surreal, once-in-a-lifetime night expedition into the protected waters of Bastimentos National Park. As the sun sets and the stars come out, the ocean beneath you begins to glow with an ethereal blue light, triggered by the movement of the boat or your own hands in the water.

• The Phenomenon: This natural light is created by microscopic organisms that emit a blue flash when agitated. It’s a rare biological wonder that turns the sea into a mirror of the night sky.
• The Experience: A short boat ride takes you away from the light pollution of town into the pitch-black mangroves. You’ll have the chance to interact with the light from the boat, and in the right conditions, jump in for a swim to see your entire body silhouetted in neon blue light.
• Timing is Everything: The intensity of the glow depends heavily on the darkness of the sky. We carefully track the lunar cycle to ensure you go on nights with the least amount of moonlight for maximum visibility.
• Stargazing: Because you are heading into remote, dark waters, the view of the Milky Way above is often just as spectacular as the water below.

Important Note: This tour is highly dependent on weather and the Hebrew calendar (lunar cycle). For the best experience, aim for the beginning or end of the Hebrew month when the moon is thinnest.
